In 2006, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) chose GEHA as one of a select number of companies to offer supplemental dental benefits to federal employees under the Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP). Since December 31, 2006, the GEHA Connection Dental Federal® dental plan has provided comprehensive dental benefits for federal employees and retirees, as well as their dependents.
In addition to the dental plan, GEHA contracts with OPM to offer federal employees three traditional fee-for-service health plan options with a preferred provider organization (PPO). GEHA was among the first in the federal market to launch a new high-deductible health plan designed to work with a health savings account (HSA).
In 2017, GEHA's FEDVIP members will have access to more than 340,000 in-network dentist locations nationwide. Network providers will not bill you more than the Plan's maximum allowable charge for covered services. Plus, GEHA maintains one of the largest health care preferred provider networks in the country, with nearly 2 million locations nationwide.
Since the organization began in 1937 as a means of helping railway mail clerks with medical expenses, GEHA has grown to be the second-largest national health insurance plan serving the federal market. The company is a self-insured and not-for-profit association. Members pay no dues, and GEHA currently waives all membership fees. GEHA maintains low overhead costs; of each premium dollar received, the company returns more than 95 cents in direct benefits to its health plan members.
